　　这几天，小悦悦的遭遇牵动了无数人的心。想起了十三年前写的一篇文章：“有一段时间，我特别害怕看到两类新闻，一类是强权对弱者的肆意欺凌，一类是众人面对生命的苦苦挣扎漠然视之。现在的情况似乎是：人们对生命是越来越冷酷了，生命遭致不幸的表现方式也因之而远不止这两类了。我不知道是中国传统文化的什么因素导致了我们如此的铁石心肠？我也不知道弘扬我们一向号称优秀的传统文化的哪一部分可以稍许软化这样的心肠？”――小悦悦的遭遇似乎更为极端，她才两岁呀！
　　很多人说那18个路人冷漠，但我想他们更多的或许是害怕，怕被冤枉，怕跟政府部门特别是警察打交道，怕无穷无尽的麻烦……陈贤妹阿姨说：“我一个捡垃圾的怕什么呢？”陈阿姨的不怕，以及当时有人劝她不要多事，都反证出那18个路人更多的是怕。
　　之所以说他们不是冷漠，是因为我相信我们中国人内心深处存在几乎与生俱来的道德感，中国几千年儒家文化的最大功效就是培养了我们的这种道德感：人应该做个有德之人，社会应该是个有道德的社会。这形成了我们民族性格中最主要的特质，我甚至认为这也是我们异于他族的最显著之处。
　　因此，在小悦悦事件中，我认为是害怕战胜了我们的道德感。谴责他们怯弱其实没有什么道理，因为我们自己也未尝不是如此；更毫无意义，因为这丝毫无改于小悦悦的遭遇，而且这样的事也必定还会在中国大地上出现。
　　我们应该追问的是：是一种什么力量让我们如此害怕，以致看见在地上挣扎、抽搐的小悦悦都赶紧绕开走掉，甚至陈阿姨去救助的时候都还劝她不要多事？这种神秘的力量，你到底是谁？来自何处？是个什么面目？以什么手段叫我们的生命和人格变得如此萎缩卑微、毫无尊严？
　　在这个事件中，小悦悦一家固然遭受巨恸，而我们也未尝得以保全――只要你的人性还没有完全泯灭。我们大家其实都受了伤，小悦悦被撞、被碾、在地上挣扎抽搐的这一幕会长久地留在我们心里，像一根针一样不断地刺痛我们的灵魂，令我们寝食难安。有没有可能有一个社会组织，让大家坐在一起，彼此诉说，彼此慰藉，彼此疗伤？
　　但根本的拯救，还是要找出那个令我们害怕的神秘力量，消解它，根除它，只有这样我们才不再害怕，我们心底的道德感才会焕发力量和光辉，小悦悦这样的遭遇才可望避免，生命的尊严才有望回归，而我们，也可以终于活得像个人样。
　　这样的拯救，除了我们自己，别无他人。
